Convince Your Senators to Vote for the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act

Action Needed:

Call toll free at 1-866-338-1015 right away! The Senate switchboard operator will answer, and you can ask to be connected with the senators from your state (don't worry if you don't remember their names). For each of your two senators, leave a message with your name and address (some will only count calls from residents of their own state) and say that you hope the Senator will vote for the Fair Pay Act that is coming up for a vote on Wednesday at 6pm.

Thanks to your calls and messages so far, the Senate is now scheduled to debate this bill throughout the day tomorrow, and will be voting on the House-passed Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 2831) at 6pm. Please encourage your Senators not only to vote for this bill but to also lobby their colleagues to vote in support of this essential effort to restore the right to fair pay.

Background:

Last year the Supreme Court sharply limited the ability of women who have suffered pay discrimination to seek back pay and other compensation. Immediately after the Court denied Lilly Ledbetter's claim for pay discrimination last May, the House passed the the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, and (better late than never) it's now the Senate's turn.

The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act will fix the Court's constitutional misinterpretation and ensure that pay discrimination victims get their fair day in court. This Act will simply return us to the longstanding rule that treated each and every discriminatory paycheck as a new act of discrimination.

It's sad enough that women are still only paid 77 cents or less to men's dollar, even though civil rights laws banned wage discrimination over four decades ago. The Supreme Court's decision could push back much of the progress that women have been making in closing the wage gap. Congress must restore those rights.
